Early Life

She was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India and grew up in Kota – Rajasthan, Bareilly and Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. Her father, Col. Niranjan Singh, who was an Ex-Indian Army officer had a transferable job and was posted at various locations in India. Hence Chitrangada and her family had to relocate themselves at various locations in India.

She completed her initial schooling from Sophia Girl’s School in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India and her Graduation in Home Science from Lady Irwin College, New Delhi. She met Jyoti Singh Randhawa when she was in class 8th and Jyoti Singh was in class 12th. Both, Jyoti Singh’s and Chitrangada Singh’s fathers were in the same regiment in the Indian Army and both the families knew each other very well.

After five years of dating, they both decided to get married and tied the knot in the year 2001. Together they had a son named Zorawar Randhawa. Unfortunately due to some differences and misunderstandings in their married life, they both got separated in the year 2013 and then officially got divorced in April 2015. The custody of their son Zorawar was officially given to Chitrangada.

Soon after she completed her graduation, she started began her career in modelling and endorsed some reputed brands like ICICI Bank, Alukkas Jewellers etc. After her success and gaining popularity, she even went on to become brand ambassador of numerous popular brands like the Taj Mahal Tea, Titan Eye Plus, Airtel, Parachute Coconut Oil, Borges Olive Oil & Dollar Missey.

She got her first initial recognition, fame and success from the album Tum To Thehre Pardesi Album sung by famous singer Altaf Raja. She then drew attention of the audiences after performing in a music video named Sunset Point by veteran lyricist and poet Gulzar (Or Gulzar Saab). Soon after Sunset Point, she was seen in a music video of singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya.

She made her debut in the Hindi Film Industry with Sudhir Mishra’s Indian political drama film named Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi in the year 2005. The film was said to be made in the year 2003 but was only released in the year 2005. The title of the movie was taken from the poem of Urdu’s greatest poet Mirza Ghalib. The movie revolved around three youngsters from the 70’s era, when India was was undergoing massive social and political changes against the backdrop of the Indian Emergency.

The film was very much appreciated by the critics as well as the audiences and went to 12 film festivals in just a period of 6 months including Turkey, Estonia, River to River (Florence), Berlin, Edinburgh, Washington, Goa, Bite The Mango (Bradford), Commonwealth (Manchester), India (Los Angeles), Dallas, and Pacific Rim (California).

In the movie, she was casted as Geeta Rao Mehta. The film was directed by Sushir Mishra and produced by Rangita Pritish Nandy. Kay Kay Menon, Chitrangada Singh, Shiney Ahuja, Saurabh Shukla & Ram Kapoor were all seen in the lead role in the movie. The film was released on April 15th, 2005 in Hindi & English languages. The budget of the movie was approximately Rs. 4 crores and it collected Rs. 18.4 crores approximately at the Box Office.

After Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, she was seen as Bhavana Dayal in Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow. This was a year 2005 Indian Hindi-language Thriller Drama Film, which was written and directed by Ruchi Narain & Produced by Sudhir Mishra under Sudhir Mishra Productions. The cast of the film involved the likes of Chitrangada Singh as Bhavana Dayal; Shiney Ahuja, Smriti Mishra, Ram Kapoor, Sarika & Boman Irani. The movie was released on September 16th, 2005.

After the release of her first two movies, she took a brake from acting from the year 2005 to 2008 before making a comeback with the leading role opposite Sanjay Suri in the movie Sorry Bhai!. Sorry Bhai! Was an Indian Hindi Romance film and had Shabana Azmi, Boman Irani, Sanjay Suri, Sharman Joshi and Chitrangada Singh as Aaliya; all in the lead role. The movie was directed by Onir, written by Ashwini Malik and produced by Vatsal Sheth, Sanjay Suri, Onir Nikhil Advani & Mukesh Talreja. This film was released on November 28th, 2008.

In the year 2011, she shared the screen with one of Hindi Cinema’s most versatile and talented actor Irfan Khan in the movie Yeh Saali Zindagi. Here, she played the character of Priti and was casted along side Irfan Khan as Arun; Arunoday Singh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Saurabh Shukla & Sushant Singh. The film was directed by Sudhir Mishra & produced by Prakash Jha. It was released on February 4th, 2011.

In the same year, ie in the year 2011, she was seen in Rohit Dhawan directed Hindi-language romantic comedy film named Desi Boyz.
